I feel "unnormal" because I want a small flat instead of a big house which is apparently the no. 1 thing you must have in the small town where I live. You can drive a shitty car, run around in rags, all socially acceptable as long as you have the large house. But I just don't want the hassle of keeping up a house when I can have a building society taking care of repairs and maintanance for a very reasonable rent. And this way, I can also buy actual clothes and avoid running around in rugs. ;)
I think I read the same mumsnet thread and those people are crazy! Who wouldn’t want heaps of space?
We’re house hunting just now and there’s a three storey, 6 bedroom house on the market right at the top of our price range which needs loads of work done to it, like completely gutted (that’ll be why it’s in our price range) and I’m having delusional thoughts about buying it and somehow doing it up ourselves. We could do one floor at a time right? This coming from someone who can barely bring themselves to hang up a picture.
It boggles my mind... I obviously get not wanting more space that you can afford to heat and maintain, but, assuming I *could* afford those things, I'd want as much space as possible!
Oh, and BUY THE 6 BEDROOM HOUSE! Even without seeing it, it sounds amazing! Also, our current house has three floors (although nowhere near that big, unfortunately), and I love it: it's not a big house by any means, but it feels much more spacious than it is because of the layout!
Yes! We just missed out on a much smaller place with 3 beds but the fact that it was also over three floors (and had the most gorgeous staircase) add it a dream house - that’s it decided, nothing less than three floors will do!
I spent more time on estate agent websites than someone who’s not planning to move should.
So far few houses match up to my imaginary perfect house, mostly because they all seem to have weird unsociable layouts!
My wishes aren’t even that wild - at least one spare bedroom. One other room for a library/study. A kitchen diner that has doors into the garden. Lots of storage. A utility room. A big porch/boot room ideally with a bathroom off it.
My only concern over this imaginary probably-will-never-happen house is that more space and more rooms equals more cleaning.
If I was wealthy enough for a house like that I could probably afford a cleaner but I hate letting strangers into my house! (Of course I may become friendly with my cleaner but then it would feel weird to be telling them what to do? Am I over thinking this??)
Oh, I've had exactly the same thoughts re: cleaning! Even without the dream house scenario I would LOVE to have a cleaner come in once a week, say, to do all the stuff I never seem to have time for, but my lovely neighbour owns a cleaning firm, so it would be weird of me to NOT ask her to do it (Imagine how awkward it would be when a rival firm pulled up outside our house!), but equally weird to have someone I know cleaning my house while I just sat there watching. So, basically, I can never have a cleaner – which is technically fine because I can't afford one anyway, but I STILL manage to over-think this totally imaginary problem on a regular basis...
I did notice during the tour from Max that the stairs are similar to your house so that’s something.
The boot room looks so cool!

There’s definitely a lot to be said for not having to be responsible for maintenance!
I like big houses but I don't like cleaning. So as long as I have my own room...
Oh, me neither — I’m just working on the assumption that if I could afford the big house, I’d be able to afford to pay someone to clean it for me 🙈

Once you’ve tried it you can never go back!
